When you hear talks of The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) pioneers, her name was rarely mentioned. Truth be told, Dorothy Vaughan was the first woman of color to manage the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (NACA’s) segregated West Area Computing Unit from 1949 until 1958. Affectionately known as a "Human Computer", Dorothy Vaughan was a respected mathematician.

Katherine Johnson began work in the summer of 1953 at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics’ (NACA’s) Langley laboratory, headed by Dorothy Vaughan. Two weeks into her new job, she was assigned to a project in the Maneuver Loads Branch of the Flight Research Division spent the next four years analyzing data from flight tests and worked on the investigation of a plane crash caused by wake turbulence. In 1958 when the Space Task Group was formed, Katherine Johnson did the trajectory analysis for the May 1961 Space Shuttle Liftoff. In 1962 Katherine Johnson was called upon to do the work that she would become most known for. She is an american hero and a respected mathematician.

Mary Jackson engineering career at the NASA Langley Research Center (formerly known as NACA) began in 1951, when she landed a job reporting to Dorothy Vaughan at the Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory’s segregated West Area Computing section. After two years of working in the "computing pool", Mary Jackson was offered a position to work with an engineer in the 4-foot by 4-foot Supersonic Pressure Tunnel, a 60,000 horsepower wind tunnel capable of blasting models with winds approaching twice the speed of sound. She was encouraged to enter into a training program that would allow her to earn a promotion from mathematician to engineer. Though these steps did not come easy in 1958 Mary Jackson became NASA's first black female engineer.
